Oh! I have slipped the surly bonds of earth…reached out my hand and touched the face of God." *

The Reverend Elizabeth (Libby) Toler, 68, of Dallas, NC, formerly of Belle, WV, passed away peacefully on Monday, November 29, 2021 with full assurance that the One in whom she believed would be waiting for her. Born in Kanawha County, WV, she was the daughter of Edward "Jim" Toler and Eileen Walker Toler.

Libby's main interest during her lifetime centered on the spiritual. She was born to be a pastor and even as a child, seemed to have a true passion for serving the Lord. After graduating from Dupont High school in Belle, WV, and working for a couple of years, she became restless, knowing something bigger was awaiting her. Moving to North Carolina, she searched for a church that would fulfill her needs as a Christian. One night, friends invited her to a Lutheran Church, where she said she knew immediately she had found her home. Feeling a call to preach, Libby completed a degree in Religion at Lenoir-Rhyne University in Hickory, NC and then a Masters of Divinity at The Lutheran Theological Southern Seminary in Columbia, SC. She was the third woman to be ordained in the North Carolina Synod and the first woman to be ordained at her home church, Holy Trinity in Gastonia, NC. She received her first pastoral call at Prince of Peace Lutheran Church in Kinston, NC followed by Mt. Gilead Lutheran in Mt. Pleasant, NC; Bethel Lutheran, Lincolnton, NC and Grace Lutheran, Bessemer City, NC. She also served as a supply pastor after her retirement.

Along with her preaching ministry, Libby was known for having the voice of an angel and she used her gift of song, singing for the Lord at any opportunity. In her teens she sang with The Toler Sisters, her family's group and with other gospel groups in the Kanawha Valley. Later she sang in the church choir or served as cantor. She would sing whenever she was asked, with or without accompaniment and always with great joy. Her signature songs were, "Oh What a Savior," "The Ninety and Nine," and "The Lord's Prayer." She also loved to read and it wasn't unusual to find her at a local restaurant such as The Country Kitchen having dinner and reading a book. She was very much loved by her family and friends, and many will miss her "Good Night Facebook!" as she signed off at night. "Good Night Sweet Sister!" We will see you some glad morning.

Libby was preceded in death by her parents, her brother, James, and her sister Joanie.

Those left to cherish her memory: Brother, Ed Toler of Scott Depot, WV; Sisters, Jewel Null of Dallas, NC; Sandra Walker (Cecil) of Richmond, KY and Bonny Rushbrook (Eddie) of Scott Depot, WV; Two nieces, five nephews, and several great nieces and nephews; Best friends, Karen Shambaugh and George Rhyne.

There will be no services at this time. A graveside service is planned for spring in WV.

The family would like to thank the staff of CaroMont Regional Medical Center for their kind and compassionate care of Libby during the past two weeks. You are so appreciated. We also thank the pastors who were faithful to visit with her and offer encouragement during her illness. Thank you to everyone who prayed, sent cards, or called.
