Life gives us a lot but once in a while, like a reminder of our fragile existence, it takes away. It is with great sadness that we share with you the peaceful passing of Leland Emery Mitchell (75) on July 7, 2006 at Saint Marks Hospital in East Millcreek, Utah after a long battle with Heart Disease. Lee was born on April 11, 1931 in Woods Cross, Utah to Hubert Brewerton Mitchell and Sarah Leonore Clay Mitchell. After graduating from Davis High School, he married Wanda May Johnson of Salt Lake City on February 15, 1951. They were sealed in the Salt Lake LDS Temple. After serving in the Marine Corps, Lee started a landscaping business in Salt Lake City. To provide higher quality and more variety in plants to his customers, Lee and Wanda started a retail garden center which grew to become Mitchell's Nursery and Gifts on 33rd South. They later added several other locations. For 45 years, Lee managed the nursery business while continuing to design landscape plans and provide landscaping for hundreds of homes, business and public spaces. Lee was very involved in the community, helping successfully start and drive various community beautification initiatives and events such as the Salt Lake Tribune's Annual Spring Garden Festival.

He also worked tirelessly to improve the Nursery industry, helping establish the Utah Nursery and Landscape Association and serving several terms as its President and as Nurseryman of the Year. He assisted in bringing Utah nurseries into full involvement in the American Nursery & Landscape Association and served for numerous years as a regional Director and as President of the national association from 1989 to 1990. He was deeply involved in professional education and training programs and often taught seminars to aid nursery and landscape professionals as well as gardeners expand their horticultural knowledge and skills. For many years, Lee had a weekly radio talk show on KSL. He also helped found the Green Thumb Program at the Utah State prison, providing a way for individuals to re-integrate successfully into society through horticulture.

He is survived by his wife Wanda, children Chad (wife Stacy) of Scotts Valley, California; Troy (partner Jean-Pierre) of Vancouver, Canada; and Wade (wife Paula) of Sandy, Utah; grandchildren Cara, Steven (wife Megan), Marinda, Benjamin, Parker, MacKenzie, Jana, Challie and Lyndie and one sister Maud Guenzi of Billings, Montana. Lee was preceded in death by his parents, eight siblings and one granddaughter, Kjersti.

A Viewing will be held Thursday, July 13 from 6-9 p.m. at Wasatch Lawn Mortuary, 3401 S, Highland Dr. The Funeral will be held on Friday, July 14 at 11:00 a.m. with a Viewing from 9:00- 10:30 a.m. at the Holladay 25th Ward LDS Chapel at 4650 Naniloa Dr., Holladay.
