In March of 1853 Gotthulf Altwein purchased 764 acres near Schumannsville in Guadalupe County, Texas. County records show the purchase price was $1,260. In May of 1853 while clearing his land Gotthulf suffered a heat stroke and died.
Gotthulf was the first person to be buried in the Altwein Family Cemetery. Wilhelmina Altwein died in May of 1880 and was buried near her husband.
