Wilhelmina Quandt was born about 1803 in Germany. She married Johann Gotthulf Altwein about 1825 in Labes, Pomerania, Prussia (Germany). Their children were: Leopold, Wilhelmine Karolina, Augusta Louise Florentine, Emilie, Minnie Otillia, Eduard Leopold Herman, Ludgwg Wilhelm Gotthulf, and Carl Gustav Heinrich. In Germany Johann Gotthulf learned the trade of miller and mill building.

In 1851 this family traveled by ship to America. They left Bremen, Germany on September 8, 1851 onboard the ship "Franciska". They arrived at Galveston, Texas on November 4, 1851. The family then traveled to Indianola, Texas probably on a smaller ship.

In March of 1853 Gotthulf Altwein purchased 764 acres near Schumannsville in Guadalupe County, Texas. County records show the purchase price was $1,260. In May of 1853 while clearing his land Gotthulf suffered a heat stroke and died.

Gotthulf was the first person to be buried in the Altwein Family Cemetery. Wilhelmina Altwein died in May of 1880 and was buried near her husband.
