She was a native of Gaston County, and was the daughter of the late Albert R. Beal and Laura Elizabeth Brooks Beal.

Martha was the 1952 poster child for the March of Dimes. She also taught Training Union Class at Shady Brook Baptist for 6 years. She was also a member of the Women's Auxillary at both Shady Brook Baptist and Unity Baptist. Martha loved to cook and she loved her cats and birds. She was an outstanding wife, mother and grandmother. Martha exceded her abilities and helped troubled children "see the light".
SURVIVORS: Husband of 46 years, John E. Belk, Sr; son, John E. Belk, Jr. "Eddie" and wife Mary "Beth" of Gastonia; sisters, Doris Beal Youngblood and Joyce Beal Fraley, both of Mt. Holly; grandchildren, Matt Anthony, Greg Anthony, Elizabeth Belk, Christopher Belk and Logan Belk.
