IN MEMORIUM
Mrs. Mary Susan Hawkins, nee Harper, was born in Monroe County, GA., and died near Piedmont, Pike County, (now Lamar County,) GA., January 30, 1904.
She was married to E. W. Hawkins in 1879, (actual certificate date is Dec 15, 1875) She was converted when she was 17 years old. She joined the Missionary Baptist Church wit her husband in 1893, under the pastorate of Rev. W. F. Brooks. She was true to her church and loved its communion. She studied the Scripture and was familiar with its teaching, being able to quote from memory a great deal of both the Old and New Testaments.
She was a great sufferer in the cyclone of March 1893. In that she lost all her earthly store and her only child, a daughter just blooming into womanhood. From this severe blow she never fully recovered, but amid it all there shone out her true character. She possessed undaunted faith. She trusted in the wisdom of and power of God in all things. She possessed many traits of character worthy of imitation.
She has gone the way of all the earth. May her husband in is loneliness not mourn as they that have no hope. As she was dying with pneumonia in its worst form, she was perfectly conscious and her last words were " I am going to glory" We know where to find her. Written by T. L. Bussey.
