David Glenn Barber, age 66 passed away September 27, 2019 at Methodist Hospital in Houston.

He was born in Lufkin, Texas in 1952 and raised in Jasper, Texas.

David was the middle child between two sisters who adored having a brother when he wasn't pulling practical jokes on them! David's father instilled a love for the outdoors in him and a passion for running cattle that continued throughout David's life. He graduated from Jasper High School where he loved playing under the Friday Night Lights as Center for the Jasper Bulldogs until he graduated in 1971. He attended Southern Methodist University, was a cadet in the ROTC and graduated with a Bachelors of Business Administration in 1976. He was an outdoorsman at heart who loved raising horses and running cattle on the family ranch. An avid hunter, David was proud of his antique gun collection, admired by many in the area. He always maintained his love of country life and took care of the family ranch. While maintaining the ranch, David worked steadily at his career and after several years in banking, he bought Gulf Welding Supply Company and developed it into a flourishing business that served all of East TX and beyond.

In his late thirties, God gave David the deepest desire of his heart and he married the love of his life, Karen. While they began raising a family of their own, he was also fervent in his desire to serve the town of Jasper and the community and he then served as mayor of Jasper for three terms from 2001-2009. His work as mayor and love for his town was instrumental in bonding the community in the aftermath of Hurricane Rita.

David and Karen owned and operated Gulf Welding Supply Company for 25 years until they sold the business in 2015.

They raised two wonderful and godly children and David was the beloved "Opa" to his young grandchildren. His children, Glenn and Beth, adored their father and often spoke of how blessed they were by a dad who took great interest in their lives. He was an extraordinary example of a godly man, husband, father and grandfather. David's influence through love, laughter, storytelling and his example as a man of prayer and faith leaves a lasting legacy for all of his family and friends and especially his children and grandchildren.

David is survived by his beloved family: wife Karen McLeod Barber, his son Glenn Barber and wife Haleigh Pickett Barber of Melissa, Texas, his daughter Beth Barber of Washington D.C., his grandchildren, Isaac Glenn Barber and Micah Elizabeth Barber, his sister Nancy Barber Welwood of Frisco, Texas and many nieces and nephews.

He is preceded in death by his parents, Julian Glenn Barber and Jeanne Kelley Barber, sister Cheri Barber Orchin and niece Amanda Welwood (105499396).

Funeral services will be held at 2pm on Tuesday, October 1, 2019, at the First United Methodist Church in Jasper, Texas.

Burial to follow at Holton-Grigsby Cemetery in Beech Grove.

Memorials may be made to the First United Methodist Church.
