Astronomer. He discovered the comet known as "1862 III", which was later re-named the "Swift-Tuttle Comet" after him and Harvard Observatories' Horace Tuttle, who indpendently confirmed the comet's existance three days after Lewis Swift's observations. Over the course of his life he would discover hundreds of comets and nebulae.
