Interment records report that Edward Compton May was born in Paterson, New Jersey, while other records state he was born in Virginia and also South Carolina. When Edward enlisted for service in the Civil War, his registration application listed his birthplace as South Carolina in his own handwriting so for this reason his birthplace was listed as South Carolina.

OBITUARY, Paterson Daily Press, 5/12/1869.

Mr. Edward C. May, the well known maker and dealer in harness at No. 64 Main Street, died yesterday at Newark. Mr. May has been failing with consumption for a past year. Some time ago he went to Wilmington, N.C., hoping to regain his strength in that mild climate. It was too late, and a week or two ago, he set out to return, but when he reached Newark was too unwell to come further, and remained there with a relative until his decease. Mr. May was an excellent gentleman, possessing qualities that endeared him to all who knew him and his death will be deplored by a very large circle of personal and business friends in Paterson and vicinity.
