Henry Wolcott Balestier was born in 1840 in Chicago, Illinois to Joseph Neree and Caroline Starr Wolcott Balestier in February 1840 in Chicago, Cook, Illinois. He was the 2nd child of 4 other siblings. He was married to Anna Beatty Smith of Rochester, New York on 30 Oct 1860 at St Luke's Episcopal Church, Rochester, New York. They had 4 children, Charles, Beatty, Caroline, and Josephine (Josephine's mother Anna was pregnant at the time of Henry's death. Where upon Josephine never got the chance to meet her father). Henry's daughter Caroline was married to Rudyard Kipling, well known author from London, England.
Henry came from a very prominent family. On his mother's side, the Wolcotts, Henry was the 2nd great grand-nephew of Oliver Wolcott, one of the Signers of the Declaration of Independence, and the 3rd great-grandson of Roger Wolcott (1679-1767) Colonial Governor of Connecticut from 1751 to 1754. His 5th great-grandfather, Henry Wolcott, came to America in 1630 aboard the Mary and John, from the port of Plymouth, England. He was a direct descendant to King John of England (1166-1216) through his 12th great-grandmother Matilda de Cornwall (1388 -1431), daughter of Richard de Cornwall, Earl of Cornwall and Baron of Burford, England, a member of the House of Plantagenet. Henry Wolcott Balestier passed away at the Maverick House in Boston, Massachuesetts from Blights Disease on the 20th of August, 1870.
