John Augustus Balestier was declared insane by his son at the age of 70 in 1912, not realizing John Augustus at the time was suffering from advanced Alzheimers, which was not widely known in the early 1900's. Since his son Elliot could not care for him, he declared him insane and John Augustus was placed into the New York City Farm Colony for the poor and insane in Staten Island.

John Augustus was not a poor man, he was from a prominent family, a well to do family, he descended from a well known family of Governors, Statesmen and prominent lawyers. He was a man well traveled, schooled in the best schools and married well, unfortunately for John Augustus towards the end of his life he spent it in the poorhouse.
