James Mercer a pioneer settler of Lucas County died at the home of his daughter Mrs. Eliza Sowder last Saturday evening. The remains where taken to Decatur City, Iowa Monday and interred by the side of his wife. He was the father of eight children three having died in infancy. One daughter and three sons reside in Nebraska, and Mrs. Sowder of Derby, with he had made his home the last few years. Mr and Mrs Sowder and E. M. Sowder accompanied the remains to Decatur City where the funeral services were held at the M. E. church of that place conducted by reverand Roberts of Cambria. The deceased married the second daughter of John Ballard one of the first settlers of Lucas County and he and his bride where the second couple married in Lucas County. He also assisted in building the first house built in Chariton. The deseased was born in Indiana.
