An East Bernard couple who worked for Fort Bend County was found shot to death in their home on Friday, and sheriff's investigators say they are searching for the killer.

The bodies of John Vasquez Jr., 34, and his wife Blanca Vasquez, 35, were discovered around midnight Friday by Wharton County sheriff's deputies responding to a call of a burglary at the couple's residence, 16320 FM 1164 in East Bernard. The Wharton County Sheriff's Office Criminal Investigation Division was contacted and responded to the scene. The scene was processed for evidence.

The on-call Justice of the Peace, Judge Tim Drapela, was contacted and responded to the scene. Judge Drapela conducted an inquest and ordered an autopsy be performed. Wharton Funeral Home responded to the scene and took custody of the two victims. The two victims were transported to the Fort Bend County Medical Examiner's Office awaiting autopsies.

"Out of an abundance of caution, there will be additional presence by the Wharton County Sheriff's Office and Wharton County Pct. 2 Constable's Office in and around East Bernard ISD," the sheriff's office told residents via Facebook under a headline that read: "Double Homicide in East Bernard, killer on the loose."

Investigators are currently following leads and have located a person of interest, the sheriff's office reported. If anyone has any information regarding this case, please contact Sgt. Scott Grosser at 979-532-1550.

The couple lived in East Bernard but commuted to work daily in Fort Bend County where she worked in the Fort Bend County Clerk's Office and he worked for Fort Bend County Road & Bridge.

"Our heart is breaking here at the Fort Bend County Clerk's Office over the news of losing our team member, Blanca Vasquez," County Clerk Laura Richard told The Herald Monday. "Blanca was friendly, a hard worker, was always willing to help out a co-worker and constantly had a smile on her face. We will miss her dearly and are praying for her family as they cope with this unimaginably tragedy."

The couple has three children, two boys, and one girl.
