He was born March 30, 1961, in Galesburg to Joseph and Ruth (Ewing) Elder. He married Michele R. "Shelly" Potts, December 27, 1990, in Galesburg. She preceded him in death on October 28, 2010.
Surviving is his mother, Ruth Elder of Panama City, Florida, a son, Thomas (and Kyleigh Sargeant) Elder of Panama City, two brothers, Bill Elder of Galesburg and Brad Elder of Galesburg, two sisters, Lucy (and Paul) Haggard of Panama City and Laurie (and Danny) Rhodes of Panama City, a granddaughter, Letti Renee' Elder and an aunt, Lucy Ewing of Galesburg. He was preceded in death by his father, Joseph Elder.
Joe graduated from Galesburg High School in 1979. He owned and operated Rainbow Carpet Cleaning in Tallahassee, Florida for several years. He later moved back to Galesburg and was a manager at NAPA Auto Parts in Galesburg. He was a member of the First Lutheran Church in Galesburg. Joe was a handyman who loved woodworking, working on cars, and fishing. He was loved and will be missed by his friends and family.
