Doris Mabel Griffith was born December 25, 1920 near Page Center, Iowa. She was the daughter of Charles Downing and Sarah Maria (Crawford) Downing. Doris and her nine brothers and sisters grew up in rural Clarinda, Iowa. They attended the Olive Branch School, located three miles south of Clarinda on U.S. Highway 71. She is a graduate of Clarinda High School. In April 1940, she was united in marriage Wayne Owen Griffith. They were blessed with two sons, Earl and Curtis.
Doris and Wayne farmed west of Red Oak until the untimely death of her husband Wayne in 1967. Doris moved to Glenwood, Iowa in 1975 being employed at the Glenwood State Hospital as a dietary Cook, retiring from there in 1985. She was well known in the community as an excellent short order cook at several restaurants.
Doris had many hobbies and interests. She was very skilled in quilting, knitting afghans, counted cross stitch and sewing. She maintained a kiln in her basement to support her ceramic interests and holding classes for ceramic enthusiasts. During the holidays, she was known to bake as many as 100 dozen cookies and bars in a season. Doris also enjoyed the beautiful flower gardens around her home.
Doris moved to Tabor, Iowa in the late 1990's to downsize and be near friends. While living there she volunteered at the Tabor Manor Care Center. She attended the Tabor Nazarene Church. Due to declining health, she moved to the Goldenrod Care Facility, Clarinda in 2015 to be near her son, Earl.
Preceding Doris in death were her parents; husband, Wayne Griffith and her nine siblings.
Doris is survived by her sons, Earl Griffith of Clarinda and Curtis Griffith of Davey, Nebraska and many nieces and nephews and dear friends.
