Former Durango resident June Faulkenburg died Monday, June 3, 2013, in Forest Park, Ga. She was three weeks shy of her 91st birthday.

Mrs. Faulkenburg was born to Charles and Sarah Downing on June 26, 1922, near Clarinda, Iowa. She was their 11th child. After graduating from Clarinda High School in 1939, she worked at Iowa Power and Light in Clarinda for four years.

On March 8, 1947, she married Art Faulkenburg in Grand Junction. They first lived on his family's homestead in Fruita before living in Loma and Colona. They moved to Durango in 1963.

Mrs. Faulkenburg worked for the Bank of Durango when she first moved to Durango. She went on to be an accounts-payable clerk at Fort Lewis College, retiring in 1997 after 20 years of service.

In 1987, Mrs. Faulkenburg was named Outstanding Civil Service Employee of the Year and was honored by Gov. Roy Romer at a reception at the Governor's Mansion.

Mrs. Faulkenburg was active at the First Baptist Church of Durango and with the Community Hospital Auxiliary. She was a member of the Garden Club of Durango.

In her spare time, she enjoyed sewing and doing embroidery, growing flowers and reading.

In 1999, she moved to Georgia to be near her daughter Alice Harper.

Mrs. Faulkenburg was preceded in death by her husband of 43 years, Art Faulkenburg, in 1990.

She is survived by her daughters Ellen Dudek of Denver and Alice Harper of Fayetteville, Ga.; sister Doris Griffin of Tabor, Iowa; three grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

Visitation will be held from noon to 2 p.m. Saturday, June 8, 2013, at Hood Mortuary Chapel, 1261 East Third Ave. A memorial service will be held immediately afterward at 2 p.m., also at Hood. The Rev. Gary Harpel of First Baptist Church of Durango will officiate. Burial will occur at Greenmount Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be sent to Royal Family Kids Camp, 290 Marion Blvd., Fayetteville, GA 30215.
