For extraordinary heroism in action near Romagne, France, October 11, 1918. In the attack on Hill 258 he volunteered to carry messages from his company in the attacking line to the battalion post of command. In order to reach the post of command it was necessary to cross an open area of about 500 yards in width, subjected to intense machine-gun fire, and under direct observation of the enemy. He was killed while engaged in this mission.
