During college, Jim attended the Army Airborne School in May of 1993. During this three-week course at Fort Benning, GA, he trained and completed his first five jumps from a C-130 and C-141 aircraft. In June of 1995, he attended a two week Air Assault Course at Fort Rucker, AL where he learnerd about airmobile warfare and how to repel out of military aircraft.

In December 1995, Jim graduated with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Criminal Justice and was commissioned as a 2nd Lieutenant in the U.S. Army. He participated in the Infantry Officer Basic Course at Fort Benning and from July to October 1996, he completed and graduated from the Army's Premiere Army Ranger Course. In November 1996 he was transferred and permanently stationed at Ft. Wainwright, AK where he served as a Platoon Leader for 16 months. In January 1998 he was promoted to 1st Lieutenant and became an Executive Officer in April 1998.

In July 1998, Jim's battalion was sent on temporary duty to Egypt for six months where he was a part of a Mulit-National Force and Observers Group whose mission was to keep peace between Egypt and Israel. In January 1999, he was transferred back to Alaska to complete his final year of active service in the Army. Jim was reactivated from the Army Reserves in June 2005 during Operation Iraqi Freedom and was stationed at Ft. Benning for training before being deployed overseas. During this time it was discovered that he had injured his back and shoulder during his previous military service and the Army had him return home for further medical evaluation. In the fall of the same year, Jim resumed his involvement with the State Patrol as well as the family cattle operation with his father and brother David. During this time, due to a busy schedule, he resigned from the SWAT team. Following his resignation from the State Patrol, Jim focused on raising cattle and accepted a position as police officer for the city of Spalding, NE on May 1, 2013.

Jim loved spending time on the family farm and raising cattle. Jim always enjoyed offering his nieces, nephews and other friends' kids rides on the tractor and four-wheeler and teaching them about the farm while he was doing chores.
