Odell Starkey passed away peacefully on October 6, 2021, at the age of 93.

Odell was born in Stidham, Oklahoma to Lee and Charlotte U. Starkey. Odell was the oldest of five children. In 1943 his family moved to Arvin, California outside of Bakersfield where Odell attended Kern Union High School and graduated in 1944. He would later attend Bakersfield College graduating with an Associate Degree in Fire Science.

He served his country proudly as both a Merchant Marine and as a soldier in the United States Army. At the conclusion of his service in the Army, Odell joined the Kern County Fire Department where he served for 35 years and obtained the rank of Captain. He was involved in firefighter training and social activities.

Odell married Dorothy Waide in April 1951 and together enjoyed a wonderful marriage, having four children Lee, Lyn, Donna and Danny.

He and Dorothy happily approved of their daughter to be taught by two missionaries from the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and later gave their permission for her to be baptized a member. That decision would lead to the other children, Dorothy and Odell all joining the Church, which resulted in multiple generations being actively involved in the gospel of Jesus Christ.

Odell enjoyed hunting, fishing (especially deep sea-fishing) clamming and camping at the beach with friends and relatives alike. He was an avid do-it-yourself individual who delighted in being able to build and fix almost anything.

Upon both Odell's and Dorothy's retirement they moved from Bakersfield, CA to Pleasant Grove, Ut to be closer to children, grandchildren and eventually great-grandchildren. They opened their loving home to many family members assisting them unselfishly. Unfortunately, Dorothy passed away in 2009, but Odell continued to interact with all the family and hosted wonderful holiday events and activities at his Pleasant Grove home.

Odell spent his last year at the Highland Glen Assisted Living facility. We are certainly grateful for the staff's support and personal care given Odell during this time.

He is survived by his children: Lee Starkey, Lyn (Kenneth) Plant, Donna (Steven) Sorenson and Danny (Kim) Starkey. Many grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife, three brothers, two sisters-in-law, a brother-in-law, two daughters-in-law (Roxanne and Susan) and a granddaughter, Alicia Starkey Butts.

As a family we cannot overstate the influence that Odell has had on our family and will continue to have for future generations. He was a wonderful man, a devoted husband, a supportive father, grandpa and great grandpa. We miss him but we are thankful for our knowledge of the plan of salvation and that families are eternal. We know that "O" is in a better place.

Funeral services will be held Monday, October 11, 2021 at 1:00 pm in the Olpin Family Mortuary Chapel, 494 South 300 East, Pleasant Grove, Utah. Family and friends may attend a viewing from 11:00 am - 12:45 pm prior to the services. Interment will be in the Pleasant Grove City Cemetery.
