HATTON, James, b. 1821, (expiree no 69), son of Catherine. Formerly a manager of a cotton mill and a warehouseman.

James was arrested on 10 February 1847, accused of the rape of 21 years old Sarah GRUNDY on 9 February 1847 in a warehouse on Sackville Street, Manchester, England. He was found guilty on 20 March 1847 in Liverpool Assize to twenty years transportation (Reference: Manchester Courier, 10 February 1847, p. 5 and Liverpool Standard and General Commercial Advertiser, 30 March 1847, p. 14). James was sent to Millbank Prison, Millbank, Westminster, London on 19 December 1848.

Imprisonment records state he was married with three children. However, the Bicentennial Dictionary of Western Australians indicates that he was a widower with two children when he arrived in Western Australia.

James was transported on the convict ship SCINDIAN, leaving England on 28 February 1850 and arriving in Fremantle, Western Australia, on 1 June 1850.

He married LOOBY, Johannah (1829-1884), daughter of Mary, by rites 1 February 1854 and by Roman Catholic rites 7 February 1858, Albany, Western Australia.

Their children were James (1855), Thomas (1857), Ellen (1858), Mary (1859), Catherine (1862), Henry (1865), Francis (1867), and William (1869).

James worked in South West of Western Australia. He was listed in 1854 in Albany by Salvado, Roman Catholic Priest. He employed eight Ticket-of-Leave men from 1854-1857.

He was also known as a painter, painting some pictures of Albany in 1853, York in 1857 and Fremantle in 1859, signing them with W.S. Hatton (Yet to be proven - this could be a separate person).
