Barbara Ann Thomas Fowler
1936 - 2021

Early Life: Barbara was born June 18, 1936, in Hoboken, New Jersey, the daughter of Tudor and Sadie Thomas. Raised in Elmira, New York, Barbara attended Southside High School in Elmira. During her junior year, she met her future husband, Kirk Fowler, while swimming at Brand Park Pool where he was the head lifeguard.
Life's Work | Service | Interests: The two became inseparable sweethearts and married in November of 1955. After five years of marriage, Kirk & Barbara took their two young daughters and moved to Provo, Utah, where Kirk completed his degree at Brigham Young University. After graduation, they moved back to Elmira, where they raised their four children. They never forgot their great experiences in Provo, and became lifelong BYU fans. While living in Elmira, Barbara worked as a teacher's aid at George Washington Elementary and Hardy Elementary Schools. Her greatest joy in life was her family. After all four of her children migrated west to attend BYU, Kirk and Barbara followed and moved back to Provo. They lived in the Edgemont area for more than 20 years and relocated to Orem, Utah, 15 years ago. She cherished the wonderful friendships that have been made throughout her life in all the places she lived. As a faithful member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, Barbara served as a stake Relief Society president multiple times and in many other callings throughout her life. Barbara and Kirk devoted the last 17 years as volunteers at Brigham Young University in the Athletic Department. They loved, supported, and counseled literally thousands of student athletes and coaches and impacted their lives in a positive way while serving as hosts in the Student Athlete Building. Many of the athletes still refer to them as Grandma and Grandpa Fowler. They also welcomed visitors from across the country as hosts for visiting teams at football and basketball games. Barbara Ann Thomas Fowler passed away peacefully, surrounded by her loving family, on Saturday, September 25, 2021, due to complications of surgery. She was 85.
Family Message: "Barbara leaves a legacy of love that is felt by everyone she has ever interacted with. There was a joyous reunion in Heaven with her mother and father, Tudor and Sadie Thomas, and other cherished relatives who preceded her in death."
