Clyde Austin Decker Jr., 91, a longtime resident of Portsmouth, died at Hospice House in Lynchburg. He was born May 6, 1916, in Fonda, Iowa, to Clyde Austin Decker Sr. and Grace Hannon Decker. After growing up in Iowa and Chicago, he moved to Portsmouth where he attended the Apprentice School of the Norfolk Naval Shipyard and met Bernice Bunn whom he married and cherished for 70 years. In 1946, Clyde took part in Operation Crossroads in Bikini assessing structural damage to ships resulting from the atom bomb tests. Later, he was instrumental in freeing the battleship Missouri which ran aground in the Hampton Roads harbor. He retired as a supervisory naval architect after 39 years of service. During his life, he was an active member of the United Methodist Church, both in Cradock and at Centenary United Methodist Church. He served as chair of the board of the former Methodist Children's Home in Richmond and as the district layleader of the Portsmouth District. Survivors, besides his wife Bernice, include his only child, Deanna Decker Hester and husband Carl of Lynchburg; two granddaughters, Sara Michelle Nay and husband David of Monument, Colo., and Emily Grace Gambone and husband Anthony of Richmond; six great-grandchildren, Kieran D., Axel C., Markus C. and Marya M. Nay and Mia Rose and Lucas G. Gambone; two sisters, Norma Arnold Butler of Phoenix, Ariz., and Harriet Amita Alto and husband Carl of Dunsmiur, Calif. The funeral will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday in Centenary United Methodist Church, Portsmouth, with the Rev. Gary Alvis and Professor Christopher Morse officiating. Burial will take place in Olive Branch Cemetery immediately following the service. Afterwards, the family will receive friends back at the church. Snellings Funeral Home, Portsmouth Boulevard Chapel, is handling the arrangements.
