She grew up on the family farm near Grant Park in Kankakee County, IL which her father had inherited from his parents. Her mother died in 1901 when she was only six years old. Her father remarried but she was raised largely by her older sisters.
She married Fred Barnhart in Chicago in 1917 when she was 22; he was 38. Their son Kenneth was born in 1918 and their son Robert was born in 1921. Kenneth died in 1924 at the age of 5 and Fred died in 1927 at the age of 48.
Clara married Henry Schroeder in 1929; she was 34 and he was 40. He had a daughter Virginia who was about the same age as Clara's son Robert. They lived in Freeport where Henry died in 1948 at the age of 59.
Clara worked for the Hoefer Manufacturing Co in Freeport IL as office manager for more than 25 years. She belonged to the Faith United Methodist Church of Freeport for more than 25 years.
In her old age, Clara went to live with her son Robert and his family in Cincinnati where she died in 1997 at the age of 101. Most of her siblings died in their 70s; she was the only one who lived beyond 100 like her grandmother Hannah Snedeker, who lived to 103.
