Mary Ann Mathews married George Coberly at the age of 16 and in addition to the 18-20 children he (along with two previous wives) and she had, she raised her daughter Ozella's children after Ozella died. Mary Ann smoked a clay pipe with the stem lying on her chin and knitted socks after she became blind according to her grandson.

Mary Ann gave birth to nine children; James S., Rachel, Ozella, Susan, Jesse Felvar, Salinda Caroline, Nancy Minerva, Joseph Vanhorn, and Lucinda Ann.
