Peter Stryker served in the Troop of Light Horse in the Somerset Co, NJ Militia during the Revolution.

In the nearby Neshanic Cemetery, located approximately 7 miles from the Hillsborough Reformed Church, several generations of Peter and Maria Stryker's descendants are buried. These descendants include their granddaughter Cornelia Sebring (nee Van Zandt) (1823-1890), great-grandson James VN Sebring (1851-1900), and gr-gr-granddaughter Cora Van Aulen (nee Sebring) (1878-1967). Peter Stryker was born on Oct 19, 1749 in Millstone, Somerset County, New Jersey, and died Feb 12, l828 in Hillsborough Township, Hillsborough, Somerset County, New Jersey at the age of 78.

He married Maria Van Nortwick in 1768 or 1769, probably in Millstone. She was born Mar 16, l752 and died Apr 30, 1829 at the age of 77. She was the daughter of Simon Van Nortwick and Maria Cornel.

Peter Stryker served in Captain John (his brother) Stryker's Troop of Light Horse in the Revolutionary War.

One member of the Daughters of the American Revolution who claimed Peter Stryker as her patriot ancestor was Nellie Garretson Parker, descended through Magdalen, with membership number 204669.

One member of the Sons of the American Revolution who claimed Peter Stryker as his patriot ancestor was Larry Patrick Cornwell, 138085. Peter's service was credited as "private, New Jersey." Source of credit was the Official Register of the Officers and Men of New Jersey in the Revolutionary War, NJ Adjutant General William S. Stryker, 1872, p 773.

Two members of the Sons of the American Revolution who claimed Peter Stryker as their patriot ancestor was Charles Watson Stults, national number 90582, who was descended from Magdalen Stryker, Maria S. Van Zandt, Peter Van Zandt Shann, and Magdalen S. Shann; and Charles Henry Sebrifo, number 095708.

Peter wrote his will Jan 18, 1828, less than a month before he died. The will is recorded as 2l88R, Somerset County, on file in the Archives and History Bureau, New Jersey State Library.

". . . I give & Bequeath to my dear wife Maria Two Beds & beding and furniture sufficient to keep house with her choice. The use of two rooms in this house I live in next to the kitchen and the use of the kitchen. Also the sum of one thousand dollars.

"Also Two Cows to be kept by my son Henry with sufficient firewood to be provided by him my said son during her life. All which I give unto her my said wife in Lieu of Dower -- I also give her my wife my Negro girl Bet.

"Item it is my will that my son in law William Cornell who married my daughter Lydia be charged one hundred and Twenty dollars for advances made.

"Item I charge Peter I. Duman who married my Daughter Ann on advances made Three hundred and fifty dollars and his note then to be considered paid.

"Item I charge my son Simon Six hundred and Eighty four dollars twenty three cents being the amount of his two notes.

"Item I charge my son Peter the sum of Six hundred and thirty six dollars for advances made.

"Item I charge my daughter Polly the sum of Two hundred dollars for advances made.

"Item I charge my daughter Catherine Three hundred dollars for advances made, and I give her my Negro Girl Patty.

"Item I charge my son John the sum that is due on his note in my hands.

"Item it is my will that my daughter Sally Nevins be Privileged by my Executors to keep the lot I bought from her husbands estate at the same I gave for it upon . . . to my estaate any Ballance if any over her dividend of my estate.

"I give and devise to my son Henry The Homestead Buildings on which I now live and one hundred acres of land adjoining them. . . .

"I give the time (?) of my Negro Tom to my Son Henry."

He lists his children Peter, Simon, John, Polly, Catherine, Magdalen, Elizabeth, Sally, Ann, and Lydia, to receive an equal share of debts owed him. He signed his will.

An inventory of Peter Stryker's personal estate was made on Feb 23, 1828. Well over 100 categories of items were listed. Total value listed was $5,777.37. Among the items were Negro Girl Bet ($10), clock ($25), portraits ($1), Family Bible ($2), Tankard silver ($10), 8 silver table and 9 Silver Tea Spoons & milk cup ($10), Coffee Mill old (6¢), lot of old Books ($1.50), gun ($2), Kitchen Furniture ($5) Box tobacco ($1), wool wheel ($2), 10 ham shoulders ($12), dog ($1), Best Wagggon ($30), ox chain ($1), old waggon ($5), Covered waggon ($10), Hay in Barn ($15) Straw in Barn ($4), 2/3 of crib of Corn ($150), 4 yearlings ($15), yoke of oxen and yoke ($50), grey mare ($40), 4 hogs ($20), 13 sheep ($26), and small stove ($10).

His tombstone stands in the Hillsborough Dutch Reformed Church yard at Millstone, New Jersey, sixth row from the back, 14th or 16th from the street, next to that of his father's. "In memory of Peter Stryker who died Feb 12, 1828, age 78 years 3 mts 24 days."
