Leslie "Joe" Hicks, 97, died on Monday 12/7/20 at Charlene Manor Extended Care Facility in Greenfield. He was born 2/12/23 in West Halifax, Vermont son of Ruth (Wheeler) and Delmont Hicks. He spent his childhood in South Deerfield, Ma and was a graduate of Deerfield High School. He was inducted into the army on March 23, 1943 and served during WW11 on the European front with the 75th devision..291st Infantry Regiment. He achieved the rank of Staff Sergeant and was awarded the Bronze Star for bravery. He is a lifetime member of the 75th Infantry Veterans Association.

He met his future wife, Annie Mildred Gough while stationed in Kentucky. They were married in Kentucky on August 6, 1946 and enjoyed 56 years of married life prior to her passing. They lived briefly in South Deerfield, Indiana and Greenfield before purchasing their home on the hill in Colrain, Ma. A skillful carpenter Joe added to his house as their family grew, often with recycled materials. He was an avid gardener, often having gardens in both Colrain and at his father's farm in Northfield. His grapes in Colrain are still being used for a tasty jam. Together with Mildred they raised nine children, instilling values of God, our country, nature and education. He loved family events, especially camping trips with the destinations of Kentucky and St. Annes, Quebec.
Their legacy grew with grandchildren and great grandchildren, all welcomed with love.
Joe worked for Boston and Maine Railroad then Treadwell Tap and Die and then Bendix Corporation retiring in 1984. During his career he was shop steward and union representative, advocating for the rights of his fellow workers.

In retirement Joe and Millie divided their time between their homes in Colrain and Zephyrhills, Florida. In retirement Joe pursued his love of art painting many beautiful landscapes and seascapes. He continued to enjoy family time enjoying time spent with their growing family as the patriarch of a large extended family. He leaves behind his daughter Linda and her husband Bernard Shaw with whom he lived with prior to entering Charlene Manor. He also leaves behind His son Joseph Ralph (Norma Dawn) Hicks of Wendall, daughter Lebelle Ruth Hicks of Maine, daughter Irene (William) Olson of Florida, son Bruno (Linda) Hicks of Georgia, daughter Susan (Richard) Bouchard of Maine and son Charles (Wendy) Hicks of Maine. Son-in-law Gary (Jennifer) Shaw of Buckland and daughter-in - law Lynda Hicks of Shutesbury. In addition, he leaves behind his sister Lottie Carr of Maine and brother William 'Bill" Hicks of Vermont. As Poppops /Grampa to his beloved grandchildren he leaves behind -- Beth and Eric Shaw, Pamela (Eric) Leh, Jennifer (Brian) Tierney, Robert (Maureen) Shaw, Christine (Garrett) Marshall, Jacob and Sarah (Sam) Olson, David Seymour, Emma and Paul (Mia) Baker, Mollie and Mason Hicks, Olivia (Chris) ,Richard Jr., Christopher, Stephen (Sabrina) and Dylan Hicks, Annebelle and Samuel Bouchard, and Lizzie and Grace Hicks...and great-grandchildren Camille and Aidan Shaw-Piegeon, Hillary(Jon) DeWitt, Kevin and Vanessa Leh, Abigail and Andrew Shaw, Alexis (Brian) and Austin (Josie) Marshall, Ender and Gabriel Seymour, Finnigan Fitzherbert, Samaya and Samuel Taylor Culberth and many nieces and nephews.

He predeceased by his wife A.Mildred (Gough) Hicks , his daughter Leslie Shaw, his son Richard Delmont Hicks, sisters Edna Cavalier and Marion Anderson and brothers Mike, Floyd, Delmont, Jr. and Laurence.

The family wishes to thank the dedicated staff of Charlene Manor and Pioneer Valley Hospice for their support and care. Funeral services and burial will be private. In lieu of flowers Joe requested donations be made to the Salvation Army, 72 Chapman Street, Greenfield, MA 01301. Arrangements are under the direction of the Kostanski Funeral Home.
