I do not know the name of the baby buried here. When I was a child, my grandmother would point to this grave and say that a gypsy is buried there and then she would tell the story which I couldn't remember as an adult. I received a version of the story from the historical society and again from locals in a Carbondale Facebook group. I haven't asked for permission to post the story here but I'll recap it:

A gypsy family lived in the area and would have moved along with other gypsies but the wife was expecting a baby soon so they stayed. Unfortunately, the baby died soon after birth. There was suspicion both ways between the gypsies and the town's people, so it was a surprise to the locals gathered in the general store when the gypsy father entered. He gave the blacksmith metal to form a cross for the baby's grave. He gave the storekeeper money for upkeep of the grave and asked that each year a new red scarf be tied to the cross.
I am using the term "gypsy" because that was the term used in the telling of the story. I apologize to anyone who is offended by the term.
