Barnes was a career civil service worker who also served as Indiana's State Commander of the Veteran's of Foreign Wars. He received a Purple Heart for wounds received in the Korean War and later helped build a South Korean orphanage. Barnes also served as the VFW's 11th District Commander and headed the ROTC program at the University of Notre Dame.
