C.S.A. Joel F. Kagey was a volunteer in Co., K, 12th VA Cavalry, enlisting on Oct. 12, 1862. In January of 1863, he was transferred Co. I, 23rd VA Cavalry. Re-enlisted on April 1, 1864 as a private in Shenandoah County, Virginia, by Captain Solomon K. Moore. October 1864 muster roll indicates he was at some point promoted to First Orderly Sergeant. He was paroled at the end of the War in Winchester, Virginia. The 23rd VA Cavalry served at the skirmish of Rude's Hill south of Mt. Jackson in 1865

Joel was the son of Jacob and Barbara Neff Kagey. He was a student when he enlisted in the Confederate Army. After the War Between the States, he married Mary "Mollie" C. Ruby on October 18, 1876 in Shenandoah Co., VA. Both were single at the time of marriage. He was a Toll Gate Keeper on Valley Pike.
