In Loving Memory

John Henry Garner was born August 15, 1956 in Dallas, Texas, one of nine children, to Pearline Beatrice Flinn and Charlie A. Garner. John passed away at the age 65 on August 21, 2021 due to his battle against cancer.

John married Phyllis Gardiner on June 21, 1980 in Mesquite, Texas. He proudly served his country for 30 years along with his brother, Jerold William Garner, as they enlisted in the U.S Navy in the buddy program. Within those 30 years, he served in the Vietnam War, Desert Storm, and numerous other US conflicts. At the time he retired, he finished his service with a Rank of E-6 Petty Officer First Class and received five Good Conduct Medals and two National Defense Medals.

John was a Baptist by faith. He spent over 40 years driving as a transportation specialist. He spent 17 years driving for Mrs Baird's Bread, 10 driving for Dupree hauling Hazardous Materials, and his final job was driving for On-Target. Through his years of employment, he has befriended and touch the lives of many of his co-workers. He enjoyed many things but loved traveling to Las Vegas to visit family, taking trips out of state for the Flinn family reunion, as well as buying Impala's and working on them. He loved spending time with his dogs, Princess and Shelby, almost as much as he did with his family. But nothing could compare to the love for his family except maybe Dr. Pepper and Yoo-Hoo.

John was preceded in death by his parents, Pearline and Charlie Garner; brothers, A.L. Garner and Charlie A. Garner, Jr.; and sisters, Earl Elizabeth McNeil, Dorothea Mae Garner, Lillie Belle Williams, and Frances Lareda Parish.

The U.S Navy Veteran is survived by his wife, Phyllis Kay Garner; son, Phillip Shawn Garner and wife Aide; older sister, Carol Hyten of Mesquite, Texas; and older brother Jerold Garner and wife Lucy of Plano, Texas; a number of other extended family and close friends.

The family will receive friends from 6 – 8:00 p.m., Thursday evening, August 26, 2021 at Laurel Oaks Funeral Home located at 12649 Lake June Road, Mesquite, Texas 75180. There will be a day in between the visitation and the service which will be at 12:30 p.m., Saturday, August 28, 2021 at Laurel Oaks Funeral Home. Pastor Dan Aleman will officiate.
