She was born July 20, 1931, in Stokes County, to the late Robert Ernest Rogers and Annie Ruth Hall Rogers.
She was a loving daughter, sister, wife, mother, aunt, friend, and neighbor.
She leaves to cherish her memory her daughters: Wanda Shelton Oakley (Ted), Joan Shelton Schultz (Mark), Anna Shelton Tilley (Wayne); brother, John Rogers (Connie); eight grandchildren: Michael Oakley, Amanda Oakley Hort, Joey Tilley (Tempy), Ashley Tilley Rummage (Adam), Tanna Tilley (Ryan), Elizabeth Schultz Sidell (Matt), Catherine Schultz, and Robert Schultz (Bethany); nine great-grandchildren: Caroline Hort, Daemyn Hort, Baylee Tilley, Harper Tilley, Avery Rummage, Ella Rummage, Kody Sidell, Wren Sidell, and Tate June Gore.
Betty Ruth enjoyed playing basketball at Francisco High School and loved watching basketball and many other sports. She loved to paint walls and color in coloring books. She loved to play Chinese Checkers. She also enjoyed playing with her grandchildren and cooking. She made "great biscuits," puddings, and pies.
She was a member of the Francisco Presbyterian Church, serving the youth group, the women of the church, numerous committees, bible school, and choir.
She was active in her community. She supported Boy Scout Troop 421, as the wife of a Scout Master for 50 years. She worked with the North Stokes High School PTA, serving as President and Vice President, and with the North Stokes Band Boosters. She was a lifetime member of the Francisco Ruritan Club, serving in many roles including President. She was also a member of the Francisco Fire Department's Ladies Auxiliary. Her awards received included Ruritan Member of the Year and Ladies Auxiliary Member of the Year.
She was a homemaker first and a farmers' wife. She was a nurse's aide, a teacher's assistant with Head Start, and a cook's assistant with the Francisco School. She was a store clerk and then became the co-owner/operator for that country store "Kodell Shelton Grocery" 1964-1999. She worked as a switchboard operator from 1999-2006 at Stokes-Reynolds Memorial Hospital.
Betty Ruth was preceded in death by her parents, Robert Ernest Rogers and Annie Ruth Hall Rogers; her husband, Norman "Kodell" Shelton; an infant daughter, Connie Shelton; her brothers: Ben Rogers, Bobby Rogers, and Ernest "Junior" Rogers; a sister, Agnes Young; and eight half-brothers and sisters.
Thank You to her many care providers these past 7 years including Tina Abbott, Linda Faries, Parkview Health and Rehabilitation Center in Chapel Hill, UNC Hospitals and UNC Geriatrics, Mountain View Medical, Stokes County and Durham County EMS, and to the people who visited, called, sent cards and Facebook messages.
