Son of William Oliver Cheswell and Mary Ann (Thompson) Cheswell.

He married Millie Belle Avery on Dec. 11, 1883 at Boston, Mass.

The only Fire Chief in the 300+ year history of the Boston Fire Department to die on duty, he suffered a fatal heart attack at the scene of a fire on Commercial Street. He was Chief since 1901 and had been with the Department since 1862. His grave is within sight of the Boston Fire Department plot at Forest Hills.
