Mary Josephine Smith married Charles Davis about 1876 in Bell County, Texas. He soon abandoned her. Their child died soon after the Smiths returned to Llano County. In 1884, after Davis had been declared legally dead, she married her original sweetheart whom her father and step-mother had prevented her from marrying: William Charles "Bill" Cowan. In the 20th-century, when the unmarked graves of Comanche Cemetery were marked, this grave was incorrectly marked as "Davis Cowan."
