US Congressman, Corporate Executive. Raised in Montville, New Jersey and in Philadelphia, he graduated from Princeton College in 1813. He then studied law, was admitted to the bar in 1816, and began a practice in Philadelphia. He served in the Pennsylvania House of Representatives in 1817, and the State Senate in 1820. In 1824 he was elected to the US House of Representatives and served one term, 1825 to 1827. He did not run for reelection in 1826, instead accepting appointment as Pennsylvania's US Attorney, an office he held until 1831. He later served on the Philadelphia City Council and became active in several business ventures. Wurts invested with his brothers in the Delaware & Hudson Canal Company (later the Delaware and Hudson Railroad), of which he served as President from 1831 to 1858. In 1859 he took a voyage to Europe in an effort to improve his health, and was still traveling when he died in Rome.
