Marianne Hitchcock was born in 1942 in Selma, Alabama, and after a short sickness died at the East Alabama Medical Center in Opelika on August 5, 2021.

She was the daughter of Walter Bertram Hitchcock, Sr. and Mary Shealy Combs Hitchcock. Her paternal grandparents were James Franklin Hitchcock and Sallie Louise Davis Hitchcock (of Union Springs, AL), and her maternal grandparents were Robert Varner Combs and Bessie Lee Shealy Combs (of Fairfax, AL). She was the sister of Bert Hitchcock, sister-in-law of Mary Carol Canon Hitchcock, and the aunt of Eric Hitchcock (Stacey) and Johanna Hitchcock Martinez (Dante).

A graduate of Demopolis High School, Marianne received a B.A. degree in English from Birmingham-Southern College and an M.A. degree in Journalism from the University of Alabama. Between earning these degrees, she worked for two years as a data analyst at the Marshall Space Flight Center at Redstone Arsenal in Huntsville. While a Master's student in Tuscaloosa, she was a staff member in the Dean of Women's Office and was selected to spend a summer in Scotland as part of the Experiment in International Living program.

A college administrator career fortuitously presented itself. She was hired as Dean of Women at Mauna Olu College in Paia, Maui, Hawaii, and worked there for two years before accepting a position as Assistant Dean of Students at the University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill in 1970. In 1977 she began a 27-year association with Emory University. Her first appointment was as Dean of Students at Oxford College of Emory, where she served for nine years. Later she would take a job at the Emory Medical School's Department of Cardiology that involved teaching communication skills and training research interviewers.

She moved from Decatur, Georgia, to Auburn, Alabama, in 2017. Her family wishes to express special gratitude to Lettie Jones and to the devoted caring staff members of Angel of Mercy Elder Care at Monarch Estates where she resided.

Wherever Marianne lived, studied, or worked, she formed deep and enduring friendships. She was a faithful, longtime member of the Episcopal Church.

A Service of Christian Burial will be held at 10 a.m. on Thursday, August 19, 2021, at Holy Trinity Episcopal Church in Auburn.

In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts may be made to Birmingham-Southern College (Office of Advancement, P.O. Box 549003, 900 Arkadelphia Road, Birmingham, AL 35254); the Kappa Delta Sorority Foundation (3205 Players Lane, Memphis, TN 38125); St. Luke's Episcopal Church (435 Peachtree St. NE, Atlanta, GA 30308); or Holy Trinity Episcopal Church (100 Church Drive, Auburn, AL 36830).
