She was born in Norfolk, VA on November 30, 1921, daughter of Burwell Austin and Ida Sylvia Jones. During World War II she worked for the Naval Supply Depot in Norfolk. She later became one of the first Certified Dental Assistants in Virginia through a program at Old Dominion University. Up until 1978, she taught ceramics at her various home studios.
She is survived by her husband, whom she married on April 16, 1955, Hobby Hobson. She is also survived by four children and their spouses, Kate Fulmer and husband Tommy of Virginia Beach, VA, Margaret Kammer and her husband Paul of New Bern, NC, Joyce Lisbeth and her husband John of Warrenton, VA and Don Hobson and his wife Grace of Newark, DE. Additional survivors include eleven grandchildren; five great grandchildren; seven nephews; and six nieces, including Dot Jean Stalnaker and her family of Chesapeake, VA. On June 26, 2007, Mrs. Hobson's youngest brother, Burwell "Skip" Jones of Norfolk, VA, preceded her in death.
The family wishes to give special thanks to her loving caregiver, Ruth Webb who helped make keeping Mrs. Hobson at home possible. Special thanks also to Joan Curtis, caregiver, Helen Gaines, caregiver and Gail Berube, friend and Hospice volunteer for their kindness and support.
The family will receive friends on Friday, July 13, 2007, from 7:00 to 8:30 p.m. at Hollomon-Brown Funeral Home on Great Neck Rd. Interment will be on Saturday, July 14, 2007, at 10 a.m. at Forest Lawn Cemetery in Norfolk, VA, followed by an 11:15 a.m. Memorial Service at Wycliffe Presbyterian Church in Virginia Beach, VA with a luncheon to follow at the church fellowship hall. Special thanks also to the ladies of the Fellowship Committee at Wycliffe Presbyterian Church.
