Early Builder of Burns Bench Canal Buried. Funeral Services Held at Jensen Monday for Albert W. Wilkins, Pioneer of Ashley Valley.

The death of Albert W. Wilkins, 74, one of the pioneers of Jensen occurred Friday evening at 5:15 p.m. at the family home following an illness of some time, which only lately became serious. Mr. Wilkins came to Jensen from Spanish Fork in 1889 and homesteaded there. He was married the same year to Mary Ellen Dudley Hollingshead, who survives.

Mr. Wilkins was one of the original builders of the Burns Bench Canal and served at times as one of its directors. During the days of hauling freight by team, he was one of the pioneer freighters of the Ashley Valley.

Funeral services held Monday at 2 p.m. in the Jensen chapel were largely attended. Bishop Ira S. Gardner presided and conducted.

Music was furnished by a special quartet from Vernal consisting of Carl G. Davis, Lloyd Winn, Mrs. May Calder and Mrs. Meda Walker accompanied by Mrs. Elva Davis, who sang sang, "Beautirul Land," "Cast Thy Bread Upon the Waters," and "Beautiful Isle of Somewhere." A duet, "One Fleeting Hour," was sung by Mrs. Calder and Mrs. Walker.

The speakers were Driver E. Smith, former counselor in Jensen ward bishopric and Archie S. Richardson, former bishop of Jensen, both from Vernal. They spoke of their long acquaintance with the departed and of his pioneer experiences offering words of consolation for the bereaved relatives. Bishop Gardner spoke briefly in closing.

The invocation was written by William Ashby and the benediction by A. DeMarr Dudley.

The floral offerings were profuse.

The pallbearers were Owen D. Wall, Curtis Dudley, Howard J. Dudley, George Wall, Orvil Dudley and Phelean Case.

Interment was made in the Jensen Cemetery under the direction of the Swain Funeral Home. Joseph S. Dudley dedicated the grave.

Albert W. Wilkins was born in Spanish Fork, Utah, the son of Mr. and Mrs. George W. Wilkins. Besides his widow he is survived by the following sons and daughters: George, Ertin L. and Harley Wilkins, all of Jensen: Melvin A. Wilkins of Montana; Mrs. Eleanor Chew, Jensen; Mrs. Elsie Case of Vernal; two step-daughters, Mrs. Mary M. Collier, Consumers, Utah and Emma of Arizona.
