Born in England 23 November 1838 her parents were James Brierly (1812-1896)and Hannah Holt (1817-1880)her siblings were George S(1837-1902 ) Eng ,Ruth B (1841)Eng ,Hannah E(1845)MA ,Helen (1846)MA, and Lydia Ann Brierly (1853-1899)MA.
Harriette and Family came to the US about 1845 ,making their home in the Massachusetts area . Harriette became a graduate from Normal School abt 1859 , teaching in the schools of Andover, Salem and St Paul Minnesota.
She met James Eckford ( a widower) a land speculator ,farmer and much more from Macon, MS , the two married 04 September 1867 in St Paul ,Ramsey, Minnesota .
One child came from this union ,a daughter Lily Josephine Eckford ( 28 July 1870 -Macon, Noxubee, MS.- 09 September 1939 Salem ,Essex, MA ) .
Harriette's husband James Eckford passed away 25 April 1873 in Macon MS.
In his will, he left her his home , furnishings and monies ,but he also left lands and other things to his children from his previous marriage(John T, Zura, Henry P ,Walter S, and Robt P Eckford) and after Harriette (as executrix of will ) had stalled about certain things ,the children took her into court to get the lands and things they were entitled and to also have their father's epitaph placed on his memorial, which she was supposed to have done ( James was buried next to his first wife in Friendship Cem ,in Columbus,MS.) After selling the old homestead and etc , She packed up their belongings , along with her daughter Lily and they moved back to Salem ,Essex, Massachusetts (Sadly though ,She never did take the time or care to have of her husband's epitaph placed on his obelisk ? However, this was finally taken care of abt 150 plus yrs later ,by me and my cousin Jim in 2021 ).
Harriette went back to teaching again ,opening up a private school of her own in Salem ,
Later her daughter Lily followed in her footsteps as a teacher in Salem High School .
Harriette passed away 22 December 1913 in Salem, MA ( all that knew her spoke about her in the highest regard )
She was laid to rest in Harmony Grove Cemetery. Her daughter Lily is buried alongside her .
