Henry Bryan was born on his father's plantation "Oak Forest" in Edgecombe County, NC, the eldest of 5 known children (3 boys / 2 girls) born to planters, Elias Bryan, and his wife Rosanna Holmes Averitte (Everett).

He was the paternal grandson of Robert Bryan Jr. & Ann Hickman who left Southhampton Co, VA for Halifax Co, NC ca. 1750. He is the maternal grandson of James Everitt (Averitte) and Mary Holmes of Edgecombe.

Henry's father died in 1821, and the 21-year old inherited "Oak Forest". Six years later, on December 11, 1827, Henry married Mary Parker Bell. They would become parents of one known child: Sarah Rosa Elizabeth Bryan (1828-1900), who later married Dr. Franklin Hart, MD, and resided for many years at their expansive plantation in Marianna, Jackson Co, Florida.

Henry Bryan died in 1866, aged 66. His bride of 27 years passed 2 years later at age 61.
