When the end was nearing he cut himself off almost from everyone, being unable to bear the physical decline. de Bascher was in the hospital where he died in 1989 with Lagerfeld watching over him until his death. Lagerfeld had an extra bed installed beside Jacques. de Bascher was cremated and his ashed were divided between his family and Lagerfeld.
