Harold Eugene "Gene" Bennett, 77, of New Madrid, died at 7:00 a.m. Nov. 4, 2009, at Missouri Delta Medical Center in Sikeston.

Born January 8, 1932, at James Bayou, to the late Ted Floyd and Hattie Mae Lindley Bennett, he lived most of his life in Mississippi County where he was engaged in farming in the Dorena community.

New Madrid had been his home for the past 25 years.

A Veteran of the US Army, he was of the Protestant belief.

On Nov. 3, 1993, he married Debbie J. Baker, who survives of the home.

Other survivors include one son, four daughters, one brother, three sisters, seven grandchildren, three great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by three sisters, Virginia Maurine Varnor, Maxine Miller, and Ercell DeBaun, and two brothers, Teddy Bennett and Beverly Bennett.

Visitation is scheduled for 5:00 p.m. Sunday at the Shelby Funeral Home where services will be conducted at 1:00 p.m. Monday.

Burial with full military honors provided by the Missouri Funeral Honors Program will follow in Dogwood Cemetery.
