Brother Bennett

Ruben Archie “Brother” Bennett, age 95, of East Prairie, Mo., died November 3, 2017, at the Sikeston Convalescent Center.

Born October 22, 1922, in Dorena, Mo., to the late Ted and Hattie Linley Bennett, he was the owner/operator of Big Oak General Store, which he opened in 1956. He served during WWII as a member of the Army Air Corp. He was of Baptist faith. On January 22, 1945, he married Lorene Christine Beasley, who preceded him in death on September 16, 2001.

Survivors include: two sons, Barry Bennett of Jackson, Mo. and Dennis Bennett of East Prairie; two daughters, Toni Russell and Phyllis Bennett, both of East Prairie; and one sister, Alfreda Miller of East Prairie. Also surviving are nine grandchildren, eight great grandchildren and two great-great grandchildren.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two brothers, Gene Bennett and Teddy Bennett; and five sisters, Viola Garrett, Ruth Byassee, Maxine Miller, Ercell DeBaun and Virginia Maurine Varnor.

Visitation will begin at 11 a.m. until time of the funeral service at 2 p.m. on Sunday, November 5, 2017, at the Shelby Funeral Home in East Prairie. Bro. David Dowdy and Bro. Martin Lucas will officiate.

Interment will follow in the East Prairie Memorial Park Cemetery. His grandchildren will serve as pallbearers.
