How does one begin to describe the life of someone who has lived for almost a century? Bud, the last of eight children, was born on January 1, 1908 in Madison, S.D. At age 17, Bud met Marvel L. Killalea, age 15 at a skating rink. They fell in love and were married two years later. Life wasn’t easy for them as they struggled through the depression and World War II. However, their love and commitment for each other has sustained them throughout the years and because of this love, they have a legacy of five wonderful children.
Bud was known and loved by so many, but especially all the children who grew up near 7th Street and Euclid in Sioux Falls. That was the location of the New Home Grocery Store, affectionately known as “Bud’s Grocery.” He and Marvel operated that landmark grocery story for almost 60 years and all the children within walking distance knew Bud and knew that it was the best place to buy penny candy and to receive some of Bud’s wisdom and advice. Bud sold the store and retired in 1992, but continued to enjoy his pastimes of fishing and artifacts and spending time with his family and friends.
Bud was predeceased by his seven brothers and sisters, Bud will be missed by all who knew and loved him, but his legacy of family and friends will live on.
Viewing will begin at 8am at Miller Funeral Home, 13th & Main, on Friday, June 15, 2007with the family present from 5 to 7pm.
