Ricky Carlson Dawson,73, of Columbus, GA died Sunday, July 25, 2021 at Columbus Hospice House. A Funeral service will be held 2:00 PM Thursday, July 29, 2021 at the Chapel of McMullen Funeral Home and Crematory with Rev. Jerry Speer officiating. Interment will follow at Parkhill Cemetery. The family will receive friends Wednesday evening from 5:00 - 7:00 PM at the funeral home.

Ricky Carlton Dawson, was born on January 8, 1948 in Columbus, GA. A Graduate of Frayser High School in Memphis, Tennessee. Ricky enlisted in the US Army in the Vietnam War; he was awarded the National Defense Service Medal, the Vietnam Service Medal with 2 Bronze Stars, and Vietnam Campaign Medal. Serving as both a marksman and sharpshooter, he rose to the rank of Private E5 before his honorable discharge after 3 years of service. Dedicated to serving his fellow veterans, he served as Commander, Judge Advocate, Trustee, and Sergeant in Arms of the American Legion Post 135.

Ricky worked for several Columbus based companies throughout his life---the Eagle and Phenix Mills, Aflac, and Columbus Carpet Mills. He retired from Honda in 2013. Yet, the first two decades of his life he resided numerous states including Maryland, Virginia, Pennsylvania, Oklahoma, California, New Jersey, and Tennessee due to his father's, John Carlton Dawson's military career. Always friendly and flexible, Ricky was excited to meet new people, and worked to make sure that his little sister felt comfortable and safe in every new school they enrolled—even going as far as walking her to her classes each day.

Ricky met his wife of 29 years, Lyndia Deloris Dawson, at a mutual friend's house in 1971. The two quickly became friends, and eventually married 21 years later in 1992. Together they created a loving home welcome to anyone, and shared all that they had with their family and friends. Ricky loved dancing and would take his family out each weekend. Bowling, dancing, concerts, fishing, softball—each weekend offered new opportunities for creating memories with his family (even taking some of his daughters to their first night club)!

Sharing his birthday with the king of Rock n' Roll (Elvis Presley) made quite an impression on Ricky. He learned to play the guitar at a young age and would tirelessly play "House of the Rising Sun" each day until he perfected it. Ricky was the life of the party! He always had a smile on his face, and would do everything that he could to let you know how special and important that you were. Teaching you to fish, playing "Dixie" on his 1972 mustang when he entered your neighborhood, singing you a song, or even writing you a poem allowed him another chance to show you how much he cared. Celebrations of every kind were a priority to Ricky, be it the annual family reunions, Easter egg hunts, Halloween costume contests, Christmas shopping trips with his daughter, a wedding anniversary, a granddaughter's softball tournament, a trip to Disneyworld, or soaking up some rays at the beach. A man of the best intentions, he sometimes could be forgetful as well, especially when it came to cars. Sometimes it might be simply forgetting to fill up his tank with gas, other times it would be closing the trunk of his car so that the Christmas presents (and sometimes even more precious cargo) did not fall out! Yet, it was always easy to forgive Ricky because he taught us all the importance of forgiveness.

Ricky loved animals of every kind---fish, dogs, rabbits, and birds (some that would even sing the Andy Griffith theme song)! An avid television enthusiast, he had total control of the remote. Visiting his house meant that you were going to be well versed in every gameshow, MASH, and 1980s murder mysteries. But, Ricky's greatest love would always be his family. Son of John and Virginia Dawson,
We, his family want him to know that "If we never meet again, this side of heaven, I'll leave this world loving you." It is not goodbye, just time to "rest your eyes" for a little while.
