OBITUARY.
John Irwin, deceased, was born in Bethea, Ohio, on the 13th of April, 1800. Married to Elizabeth Merritt in 1822, who survives him. He moved from his native town to Indiana in 1835, and subsequently to Minnesota in 1861, and finally to Kansas in 1869. He resided at Fairfield in this County since his settlement in the State. Died at his home on the 1st, inst., and was buried at Spring Grove Cemetery on the 2nd.
Father Irwin early embraced religion and united with the M. E. Church, of which he remained a faithful and consistent member, for years filling important offices and lived a christian life until called to the church triumphant. He died in great peace.
He united with the Masonic Fraternity in 1829, and continued an active worker until called from labor to reward. at the time of his death he was a member of Oskaloosa Lodge and an honorary member of Winchester Lodge. His funeral was attended by the Masonic Fraternity, Oskaloosa, Winchester, and Valley Falls, Lodges being present, together with an immense number of friends. Funeral preached in the grove, by Rev. E. Gill, and Masonic Funeral Exercises conducted by Dr. Gephart in the most impressive manner; after which the members marched slowly around the grave each depositing therein a sprig of Evergreen--emblem of immortality--and left their Brother and friend to await the Resurrection Morn.
