Mary Lou (Baughman) Carpenter passed away peacefully on July 20, 2021, surrounded by her adoring family in her beloved, lifelong home of Toto, Indiana. Mary was preceded in death in 2008 by her loving husband of 54 years, William Barlow (Bill) Carpenter, with whom we know she has joyfully reunited in Heaven.
Mary retired from Howmet Corporation in LaPorte, Indiana in 1990 where she worked for eighteen years making airplane engine parts. Mary was an avid gardener, cook, and baker who loved to feed and visit with the many family and friends who gathered around her dining room table. Always sure to pass along some family history and personal memories, Mary was happy to tell and listen to stories for hours. Mary also loved to read, quilt, and crochet. She adored animals and almost always had a small dog to keep her company.
Mary was born to Edith (Philippi) and William "Bunk" Baughman in Toto, Indiana on February 7, 1935, both of whom preceded her in death. Mary was also preceded in death by three of her siblings, Marjorie (Louis) Spoor, Dorothy (Don) Sehstedt, and Harold (Darlene) Baughman. Mary also had three stillborn siblings who she spoke of often – twins Violet and Charles Baughman and Edward Baughman. Mary's youngest sister, Norma Jean (Stanley) Shenk of Grove City, Ohio, survives.
Mary leaves behind her three loving children with Bill – Connie Sue (Dan) Boyer of Toto, William Dale (Vicki) Carpenter of Plymouth, and Sharon Kay Carpenter of Knox, Indiana. Mary was blessed with eight grandchildren, Becky (Smith) Trenner of Indianapolis, Karen (Smith) White of Valparaiso, Katie (Smith) Meyers of Knox, Michael Carpenter of Plymouth, Cindy (Carpenter) Goodnight of Edmond, Oklahoma, Heather (Kajer) Zosso of Carmel, Kevin Kajer of Zionsville, and Jennifer Kajer of Indianapolis, Indiana One of Mary's greatest joys in her later years was spending time with her thirteen great-grandchildren Isaiah, Kendra, and Colton Amidei, Chloe, Ebert and Joanna White, Maddox Goodnight, Dawson Meyers, Maggie and Annie Trenner, Greyson and Finley Grace Kajer, and Holland Zosso.
Mary valued her family above all else – she was a wonderful mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, aunt, and sister and will be dearly missed by those she leaves behind.
