He was born in McAlester, Oklahoma, the son of Jose L. and Antonia (Rodriguez) Hernandez. He attended school at McAlester High School and married Gladys Marie Strate on Jan. 7, 1947, in McAlester. He enlisted in the United States Army on Sept. 1, 1950, serving during the occupation of Japan and then during the Korean War with the 45th Infantry Division. He received the Japan Army of Occupation Medal, Korean Service Medal with Bronze Service Star, the Combat Infantry Badge and the United Nations Service Medal. He received an honorable discharge on July 3, 1952, at the rank of sergeant first class (T). After returning to McAlester, he worked for Long Bell Lumber Company for numerous years, managed the Ready Mix Concrete Company and the McAlester Elks Lodge. He then worked for Jackie Brannon Correctional Center as the food service supervisor until his retirement. He was a member of St. John's Catholic Church and the Robert B. Thomas Veterans of Foreign Wars Post No. 1098, where he was former commander and the present quarter master. He enjoyed cooking, spending time with his family and friends as well as performing community service through the V.F.W. He passed away in McAlester at the age of 78. He was preceded in death by his parents, Jose and Antonia Hernandez; his wife, Gladys M. Hernandez on Sept. 10, 1993; his grandmother, Gorgonia Lopez and five brothers, John Hernandez, Linzel Hernandez, Teno Hernandez, Socoro Hernandez and Tony Hernandez.
