... info from grandson Jack Howard Barnes:
My grandfather, Delbert Ulysses Barnes was born in Illinois and came to Omaha, Ark., where he married Eda Andrews Barnes. There were eleven born to this union. They settled at Self, Ark., located on the Missouri-Pacific Railroad close to a creek named Barnfork (Barren Fork--K.T.). He operated a grocery and dry goods store dealing also in cattle, horses, mules, furs, timber, lumber and operated a sawmill. On his sale pad, on the back side was this line; "If you like what you bought, tell others; if not, tell me.: Grandpa knew a little magic and he claimed he could get rid of warts by rubbing them and saying the magic word that was given to him by someone who possessed this power. He told no one the words he used. He had lots of fun and he loved to sing. His favorite hymn was 'Farther Along' and he sang bass. He was never a church member, but would tell anyone he was a believer in God and he was a Baptist in his belief. He was never baptized. He loved ice cream and lemon pie. He wore a white beard and I remember that he cut it off a few years before he died. My brother, Ward Barnes, told me that he and Platt Barnes (brother) were separated from the family as they crossed the Mississippi River going westward. As a result, Delbert and Platt came to Omaha and settled, Delbert marrying Eda Andrews and Platt marrying Valaire (Valera) Jennings.
