Mr. Harley Haston Carter, age 82 & his wife Helen Louise Luffman Carter, age 73, both of Carter Mill Road, passed away Monday, March 26, 2007. Mr. Carter was born November 23, 1924 in Wilkes County to Kenis & Hallie Norman Carter; Mrs. Carter was born November 11, 1933 in Surry County to Grady & Maude Dula Luffman.

Mr. Carter retired from Abitibi and he was a Veteran of the United States Army and served during WWII and Mrs. Carter retired from Elkin Valley Apparel and they both attended Cool Springs Baptist Church. In addition to their parents, Mrs. Carter was preceded in death by a brother, Clyde Luffman.

Survivors include: their son, Gary "Buck" Carter and wife Carolyn of New Port Richey, Fla.; their daughters, Glenda Watson and husband Norman, Tammy Rice and husband Brian all of Moorsville; six grandchildren, Wendy Griffith and husband Rod, Brian Watson, Brandon Carter, Casey Carter, Jacob Rice and Joshua Rice; one great granddaughter, Hannah Griffith; Mr. Carter was also survived by two brothers, Ernest Carter of Elkin, K.M. Carter, Jr. of Yadkinville; five sisters, Mary Collins and Evon Couch both of Elkin, Millie Axel and husband Jim of Venice, Fla., Vassie Luffman and husband Haston of State Road, Peggy Cornelius and husband Allen of Pilot Mountain; Mrs. Carter was also survived by five brothers, Bill Luffman and wife Nell, Arvil Luffman and wife Sue, Fred Luffman and wife Judy, Haston Luffman an wife Vassie all of State Road; Dwayne Luffman and wife Linda of Roaring River; two sisters, Opal Southard of Winston-Salem, Alma Jean Pardue and husband Ken of N. Wilkesboro.

Funeral services will be held Friday, March 30, 2007 at 2:00 p.m. at Cool Springs Baptist Church by Rev. Russ Nixon and Rev. Ken Pardue. Burial will follow in the cemetery. They will be placed in the church 30 minutes prior to the service. The family will receive friends Thursday evening from 6:30-8:30 p.m. at Hodges Funeral Home in Elkin.
