Sophia's mother died in Germany just prior to the family sailing to America, approx. 1864-1867. One history indicates that Elizabeth Rochow sailed in her place, probably to help with the two young children, Sophia and her sister Bertha. They sailed along with the Timm families and came to Caledonia, Michigan where one of the Timms had relatives. Charles and Elizabeth were married, had seven children and lived in Caledonia until their death.
