Thomas Jeferson Farrar was born in Tarboro, Edgecombe County, NC, the 4th of 6 children born to Owen C. "O.C." Farrar and his (2nd) wife, Rebecca Isabella "Belle" Hamilton, one of two surviving children from this marriage.

Taking over management of the landmark Farrar Hotel in Tarboro, NC, from his father, Thomas J. Farrar modernized the facility in the early 20th Century. By 1917, he had added running water and steam heat in every room, and opened a "European Popular Price Cafe" on the ground floor.
Built by Owen C. Farrar in 1887, The Farrar Hotel remained a landmark in Tarboro for many years. The hotel was a 3-story, 55 room building containing an office and 6 retail stores on the ground floor. The Farrar Hotel took up an entire city block and was built in the center of town, on the corner of Main Street & St. James (where the present day Maxway store is located). It was opposite the former (now destroyed) Edgecombe County Courthouse (which today holds the offices of the Chamber of Commerce).

Thomas Jefferson Farrar married, before 1920, Miss Mary Dean Davis. They were the parents of Mary Marshall Farrar. Mary Marshall Farrar became the wife of Preston L. Martin, Jr.

"Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life and I will dwell in the house of the Lord forever." Psalm 23:6
